For current architecture, see [CANONICAL_PLATFORM_ARCHITECTURE.md](../architecture/CANONICAL_PLATFORM_ARCHITECTURE.md).\n\n## Overview\n\n**Frozen the backend architecture to support all frontends.**\n\nThe Projection Facade Layer is the missing business assembler between the Gateway and the Capability Engine. It implements the architectural principle: **\"The backend is capable of everything. Every frontend should consume only what it needs.\"**\n\n---\n\n## What Was Built\n\n### 1. Projection Context Types (`services/projection-engine/src/types.ts`)\n\nDefines the contract for every frontend request:\n\n```typescript\nProjectionContext {\n  tenant_id, workspace_id, user_id           // Identity\n  role, permissions                           // Access\n  device, user_agent                          // Environment\n  features, tier                              // Capabilities\n  projection_type, request_id, timestamp      // Request info\n}\n```\n\nEvery request carries full context about **who**, **what**, **when**, and **where**. The backend uses this to assemble only what's needed.\n\n### 2. Workspace Facade (`services/projection-engine/src/facades/workspace-facade.ts`)\n\nFirst concrete example of a Projection Facade:\n\n```typescript\nWorkspaceProjection {\n  overview: {\n    health_score: 87\n    metrics: { total_revenue, active_customers, pending_tasks }\n    kpis: KPICard[]\n  }\n  \n  execution: {\n    tasks: Task[]\n    workflows: Workflow[]\n  }\n  \n  intelligence: {\n    signals: Signal[]\n    insights: Insight[]\n    recommendations: Recommendation[]\n  }\n  \n  collaboration: {\n    activity: ActivityItem[]\n  }\n  \n  search: {\n    enabled: boolean\n    placeholder: string\n  }\n}\n```\n\n**Key principle: Semantic sections, not widgets.**\n\nThe Workspace projection is organized by **what the user does**, not **how it's displayed**:\n- `overview` - See the big picture\n- `execution` - Get things done\n- `intelligence` - Understand what matters\n- `collaboration` - Know what changed\n- `search` - Find anything\n\n### 3. Facade Registry (`services/projection-engine/src/facades/facade-registry.ts`)\n\nCentral routing for all projection types:\n\n```typescript\nFacadeRegistry {\n  facades: Map<string, IProjectionFacade>\n  \n  loadProjection(context) → T\n  getAvailableProjections() → string[]\n  hasProjection(type) → boolean\n  registerFacade(type, facade)\n  unregisterFacade(type)\n}\n```\n\nThe registry is the routing layer that maps:\n- `workspace` → WorkspaceFacade\n- `customer-success` → CustomerSuccessFacade (TODO)\n- `executive` → ExecutiveFacade (TODO)\n- `developer` → DeveloperFacade (TODO)\n- `brainstorm` → BrainstormFacade (TODO)\n- `twin` → TwinFacade (TODO)\n\n### 4. Projection Endpoint (`services/gateway/src/router.ts`)\n\nNew unified frontend entry point:\n\n```\nPOST /api/v1/projection\n{\n  projection_type: 'workspace' | 'customer-success' | 'executive' | ...\n  tenant_id, workspace_id, user_id\n  role, permissions, device, features\n}\n```\n\nReturns:\n\n```typescript\n{\n  request_id, timestamp\n  projection: WorkspaceProjection (or other type)\n  metadata: {\n    cached, cache_key, ttl_seconds\n    capabilities_available, user_permissions\n    rate_limit: { limit, remaining, reset_at }\n  }\n}\n```\n\n---\n\n## Architecture Flow\n\n```\nFrontend                    Gateway                  Facade Layer\n     │                         │                          │\n     ├─→ POST /api/v1/         │                          │\n     │   projection {           │                          │\n     │     projection_type,    │                          │\n     │     tenant_id,          │                          │\n     │     user_id,            │                          │\n     │     role, device...     │                          │\n     │   }                      │                          │\n     │                         ├─→ FacadeRegistry         │\n     │                         │   .loadProjection()      │\n     │                         │                          ├─→ WorkspaceFacade\n     │                         │                          │   .buildProjection()\n     │                         │                          │\n     │                         │                          ├─→ Compose capabilities\n     │                         │                          │   (TODO: Adaptive Spine,\n     │                         │                          │    Tasks, Intelligence,\n     │                         │                          │    Audit Log, Search)\n     │                         │                          │\n     │                         │ ← WorkspaceProjection   │\n     │ ← ProjectionResponse    │ { overview, execution...}\n     │   {                      │\n     │     projection: {...},   │\n     │     metadata: {...}      │\n     │   }                      │\n```\n\n---\n\n## Key Principles Implemented\n\n### 1. Backend Decides, Not Frontend\n\n**Old Way (Widget Coupling):**\n- Frontend calls 5+ endpoints\n- Frontend composes response\n- Frontend knows service names\n- Frontend is tightly coupled to backend topology\n\n**New Way (Projection Facades):**\n- Frontend makes 1 request: \"give me workspace\"\n- Backend assembles response\n- Backend hides service topology\n- Frontend is loosely coupled\n\n### 2. Context-Aware Assembly\n\nThe backend knows:\n\n```typescript\nif (context.device === 'mobile') {\n  // Return smaller payloads\n  // Limit data sets\n}\n\nif (context.role === 'viewer') {\n  // Hide sensitive metrics\n  // Remove edit capabilities\n}\n\nif (context.tier === 'free') {\n  // Remove recommendations\n  // Limit search results\n}\n```\n\n### 3. Semantic Sections Over Widgets\n\nNot organized by component, but by **user intent**:\n\n```typescript\n// WRONG - Widget Names\n{\n  health_score_card: {...}\n  kpi_card: {...}\n  task_list: {...}\n  activity_feed: {...}\n}\n\n// RIGHT - Semantic Sections\n{\n  overview: { health, metrics, kpis }\n  execution: { tasks, workflows }\n  intelligence: { signals, insights }\n  collaboration: { activity }\n  search: { ... }\n}\n```\n\n### 4. Tier Structure\n\n```typescript\nTier 1 (Required)\n├── overview (health, metrics)\n├── execution (tasks, workflows)\n├── intelligence (signals, insights)\n├── collaboration (activity)\n└── search\n\nTier 2 (Optional)\n├── calendar (events)\n├── email (messages)\n└── documents\n\nTier 3 (Future)\n├── webhooks\n├── integrations\n└── notifications\n```\n\nFrontend can depend on Tier 1. Tier 2 and 3 are nice-to-have.\n\n---\n\n## How It Enables Multiple Products\n\n```typescript\n// Workspace Projection - Operational Hub\nsdk.projection.load({ projection_type: 'workspace' })\n→ WorkspaceProjection { overview, execution, intelligence, collaboration }\n\n// Customer Success Projection - Account Management\nsdk.projection.load({ projection_type: 'customer-success' })\n→ CustomerSuccessProjection { accounts, health, renewals, signals, timeline }\n\n// Executive Projection - Business Intelligence\nsdk.projection.load({ projection_type: 'executive' })\n→ ExecutiveProjection { metrics, goals, insights, forecast, approvals }\n\n// Developer Projection - Integration & Automation\nsdk.projection.load({ projection_type: 'developer' })\n→ DeveloperProjection { mcp, adk, workflows, registry, logs, schema }\n\n// Brainstorm Projection - Creative Collaboration\nsdk.projection.load({ projection_type: 'brainstorm' })\n→ BrainstormProjection { ideas, memory, chat, tasks, search }\n\n// Twin Projection - Full Platform Access\nsdk.projection.load({ projection_type: 'twin' })\n→ TwinProjection { all capabilities, full control }\n```\n\nEach product is just another projection. Same backend, different assembly.\n\n---\n\n## Files Created\n\n| File | Lines | Purpose |\n|------|-------|---------|\n| `services/projection-engine/src/types.ts` | 117 | Context, request, response types |\n| `services/projection-engine/src/facades/workspace-facade.ts` | 417 | Workspace projection assembly |\n| `services/projection-engine/src/facades/facade-registry.ts` | 98 | Projection routing registry |\n| **Total New** | **632** | **Architectural foundation** |\n\n## Files Updated\n\n| File | Changes |\n|------|---------|\n| `services/gateway/src/router.ts` | Added POST /api/v1/projection endpoint |\n| | Kept legacy GET /api/v1/workspace/dashboard for backward compatibility |\n\n---\n\n## Status: Phase 2a Complete\n\n| Item | Status |\n|------|--------|\n| Projection Context defined | ✅ |\n| Facade pattern implemented | ✅ |\n| Workspace Facade created | ✅ |\n| Facade Registry created | ✅ |\n| Unified endpoint created | ✅ |\n| Backward compatibility maintained | ✅ |\n| Ready for service integration | ✅ |\n\n---\n\n## Ready for Phase 2b: Service Integration\n\nThe architecture is now ready to integrate real capabilities:\n\n```typescript\n// Phase 2b Tasks\n\nWorkspaceFacade.buildProjection():\n  1. Call Adaptive Spine → health_score, metrics\n  2. Call Workspace Service → tasks, workflows\n  3. Call Intelligence → signals, insights, recommendations\n  4. Call Audit Log → activity timeline\n  5. Call Search Index → search capabilities\n  6. Compose into WorkspaceProjection\n  7. Return to frontend\n\nThen create additional facades:\n  8. CustomerSuccessFacade\n  9. ExecutiveFacade\n  10. DeveloperFacade\n  11. BrainstormFacade\n  12. TwinFacade\n```\n\n---\n\n## Why This Matters\n\n### Before Phase 2a:\n\nFrontend was tightly coupled to services:\n```\nHomeView → GET /spine (health)\n        → GET /signals (insights)\n        → GET /tasks (tasks)\n        → GET /audit (activity)\n        → 4+ network requests\n        → Widget-level orchestration\n```\n\n### After Phase 2a:\n\nFrontend is loosely coupled to backend:\n```\nHomeView → POST /projection { type: 'workspace' }\n        → 1 request\n        → Backend orchestrates\n        → Receives complete DTO\n        → Pure presentation\n```\n\n### Impact:\n\n- **Network**: 4+ requests → 1 request (75% reduction)\n- **Coupling**: Tight → Loose (service topology hidden)\n- **Products**: Single codebase, many projections\n- **Maintenance**: Changes to services don't affect frontend\n\n---\n\n## Git Commit\n\n```\n3da5c53 - feat: Implement Projection Facade Layer (Phase 2a)\n```\n\n---\n\n## Next Steps\n\n### Immediate (Phase 2b):\n\n1. Integrate Adaptive Spine into WorkspaceFacade\n2. Integrate Workspace Service into WorkspaceFacade\n3. Integrate Intelligence into WorkspaceFacade\n4. Integrate Audit Log into WorkspaceFacade\n5. Test complete data flow\n\n### Short-term (Phase 2c-2e):\n\n6. Create additional facades (CustomerSuccess, Executive, Developer)\n7. Add Projection Context pattern to all facades\n8. Implement caching at facade layer\n9. Add real-time WebSocket support\n\n### Medium-term (Phase 3+):\n\n10. Implement all Tier 2 sections (calendar, email, documents)\n11. Create Tier 3 sections (webhooks, integrations, notifications)\n12. Implement search capabilities\n13. Add analytics and monitoring\n\n---\n\n## Architecture Freeze Summary\n\n✅ **Backend frozen. Ready to support all frontends.**\n\nThe system now has:\n- Clear layers (Gateway → Facade → Capability)\n- Service topology hidden from frontend\n- Semantic organization (sections, not widgets)\n- Context-aware assembly (device, role, tier)\n- Multiple projections from one backend\n- One SDK for all frontends\n\n**Every backend capability is now discoverable and composable into any frontend product.**\n"}
